WIDE-ANGLE CONFERENCE “OUR STORIES BELONG TO ALL : LOCAL CULTURE AND GLOBAL AUDIENCE”

Organized by the French Institute

In the age of streaming and social media, mass media is often the bedrock of creative industries. Financial sustainability is predicated on the wide appeal and the mass distribution of cultural contents. But the drive to cater to a global audience runs the risk to dilute the richness of local and national cultural heritage and creation into a standardized cultural formula.

African cultural industries have undergone a significant shift in the past decades. TV series, podcasts, and videogames have reshaped the impact of African creative industries on regional, continental, and global cultural markets. An ever-growing demand for African culture has opened new opportunities for audiovisual and cultural industries. But when production often relies on investments from the North and when a few African countries tend to dominate foreign markets, how do we preserve, promote, and enrich cultural diversity across Africa?

Is cultural standardization the inevitable by-product of scaling-up production value for African creative industries ? What place is left for linguistic and cultural diversity in today’s cultural markets ? What is the role of the diasporas in promoting and disseminating a wide range of cultural expressions ?

WIDE-ANGLE CONFERENCES

The Wide-Angle Conferences provide a forum for reflection on the major contemporary issues affecting the audiovisual and cultural industries. This year’s event features three key discussion topics: sustainability in the audiovisual ecosystem, feminism and decolonialism in video games. Artists, researchers and professionals will be combining their perspectives to work together on fairer, more inclusive and sustainable practices. It’s time for questioning narratives, rethinking structures, and collectively imagining possible futures for the sector.
