INDUSTRY TALK “SOUND DESIGN : THE BLIND SPOT OF AFRICAN AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTION”

Français flagEnglish flag

While African cinema and audiovisual continue to gain visibility, one crucial element often remains underexplored in the continent: sound design. Studio engineers and sound professionals are increasingly aware of the opportunities that sound represents in audiovisual contents and are starting to develop these activities (in advertising, games, cinema etc.). Yet, they face several obstacles (copyright, remuneration issues and an undervaluation of sound as a strategic component of audiovisual creation) that do not allow them to put this activity at the centre of their business model. What are the consequences for audiovisual contents? In many countries, sound design and music in gaming, films, tv or series is a booming where sound is not an afterthought but a central, narrative force capable of elevating a production. What can African sound designers do differently? How to integrate sound design from the beginning of projects in a desire to export on a continental scale and beyond? How to unlock the potential of sound design in Africa?
