“AFROBEAT REBELLION” : A UNIQUE AND MASSIVE EXHIBITION ON THE LEGEND FELA KUTI

A Whitespace Creative Agency (AWCA) + Ambassade de France au Nigéria + Philharmonie de Paris Exhibition ‘Fela Kuti: Afrobeat Rebellion’, first presented in Paris in 2022 at the Philharmonie de Paris, is an exhibition created by a team of French-Nigerian curators in collaboration with Fela Kuti’s family. It arrives in Nigeria with an enriched offering. With more than 350 rare objects, immersive installations, and a rich program of performances, conferences and films, this historic three-month project will bring Fela’s legacy to the heart of the city of Lagos and pass it on to a new generation.

The Afrobeat Rebellion exhibition will explore in depth the image of Fela Kuti, not only as a musical icon, but also as a man, a Nigerian and a revolutionary. It aims to raise awareness of his cultural and political influence, while highlighting his style, his relationships with his family and friends, and the important role played by the Kalakuta Queens in his life and movement. Visitors will be immersed in the world of Fela Kuti through archival photographs, video footage and rarely seen soundscapes. The exhibition is exclusively powered by the French Embassy in Nigeria and produced by A Whitespace Creative Arts (AWCA) Foundation.

As a part of a wider program entitled “Alternative Nigerian heritages” and funded both by the French ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French ministry of Culture, this project is emblematic of this fruitful Franco- Nigerian cultural cooperation, in a mutual and balanced partnership. It also symbolizes the strong links that the iconic figure of Fela Kuti had with France, a bond preserved up to date by his family.
